Mariah Carey is opening up about the “challenging weeks” she’s faced following the unexpected deaths of her mother, Patricia Carey, and sister, Alison Carey, who both passed away on the same day.
In an Instagram update on Sunday, the “Fantasy” singer shared a video of herself rehearsing her 2005 hit “It’s Like That,” captioning it, “Back at work. It’s been a couple of rough weeks, but I appreciate everyone’s love and support so much and I can’t wait to see my fans in China & Brazil. Love you!”
The 55-year-old pop diva has been candid about her grief since the tragic events unfolded. In a statement to People on August 26, she expressed her sorrow: “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” Carey also noted, “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.”
Reports suggest that Mariah did not have the opportunity to see her older sister Alison, 63, before her death. Alison’s friend, David Baker, told The US Sun that Carey did not reach out to Alison during her time in hospice care. “A phone call or, better still, a video call would have meant so much to Alison. But it never came,” Baker revealed.
Baker further shared that Alison had expressed her disappointment over the lack of contact from Mariah and questioned if any of her relatives would attend her funeral. “She talked about it frequently. She wondered if Mariah or any of her relatives would come to her funeral,” he said.
Mariah also has a brother, Morgan Carey, but reports indicate that their relationship is estranged.
