Reports earlier this week hinted at a split between the couple, citing alleged differences over starting a family and a notable 14-year age gap between the 54-year-old singer and the 40-year-old dancer and choreographer.
Taking to his Instagram account on Tuesday, Tanaka addressed the rumors and clarified their current relationship status.
“With mixed emotions, I share this personal update regarding my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven extraordinary years together,” he shared in a statement.
He emphasized that their decision to pursue different paths was mutual, and they navigate these separate journeys with profound respect and gratitude for the time spent together.
Expressing appreciation for the memories and artistic collaborations, Tanaka acknowledged Mariah’s dedication to her family and craft.
He conveyed love and gratitude for Mariah and her children, noting their enriching impact on his life. Tanaka requested understanding, privacy, and respect during this sensitive time and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans.

Tanaka first crossed paths with Carey in 2006 when he joined her on The Adventures of Mimi Tour as a backup dancer.
