Hollywood is mourning the loss of Michael Cole, best known for his role on the iconic TV series The Mod Squad. He passed away on December 10 at the age of 84.
While no cause of death has been revealed, his representative confirmed he was surrounded by loved ones after living a full and vibrant life.
Cole’s talent and magnetic presence made him a defining figure of his era.
His role on The Mod Squad from 1968 to 1973 broke barriers by addressing important themes of racial and social justice, with Cole bringing authenticity and heart to the series.
The show, which featured Cole alongside Clarence Williams III and Peggy Lipton, focused on a group of rebellious social outcasts who become undercover cops to avoid jail time.
Cole’s representative highlighted his warm spirit, recalling how he made those around him feel special by sharing anecdotes from his Hollywood experiences.
“A storyteller at heart,” the statement continued, “his contributions to the arts and his enduring kindness ensure his memory will live on.”
Born in Madison, Wisconsin, on July 3, 1940, Cole had a diverse career in film and television, starring in shows like Gunsmoke, The Bubble, and Chuka.
He also guest-starred in hits such as Wonder Woman, The Love Boat, General Hospital, and ER.
Cole was the last surviving member of The Mod Squad trio, with Peggy Lipton passing away from colon cancer in 2004 and Clarence Williams III following in 2021.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Shelley, and his children.
