A year after losing her 17-year-old son, Harvey Owen, in a tragic car accident, Crystal Owen is honoring his memory by launching a charity inspired by his love for music and art.
The Shrewsbury teen, who passed away alongside three friends near Garreg, Gwynedd, was a passionate guitarist and a creative soul.
The charity, Shine On With Harvey Owen, will raise funds for music and arts programs that support disadvantaged young people.
“Harvey always helped others and had a soft spot for anyone struggling,” Mrs. Owen said. “This charity feels like the perfect way to keep his memory alive by continuing his kindness.”
Harvey began playing the guitar at a young age but became deeply passionate about it in the year before his passing.
“It gave him so much confidence,” Mrs. Owen shared. “I want to help other young people experience the same joy and growth that Harvey found through music.”
The charity’s foundation was made possible by donations from a JustGiving page set up after the accident, which raised over £10,000.
Plans are now underway for charity events in December, with funding opportunities for young people to be rolled out next year.
Mrs. Owen, who has a background in youth services, highlighted the life-changing impact of music and arts funding.
“For young people who can’t afford lessons, these opportunities can be transformative,” she said.
She hopes the charity will partner with organizations like The Hive, which use creative programs to build confidence and provide a sense of belonging.
The charity’s name, Shine On, reflects Harvey’s vibrant personality and enduring legacy.
“He was such a lovely young man, and we just want his memory to shine on,” Mrs. Owen said.
Looking ahead, the charity plans to introduce a Shine On Award to celebrate young people excelling in music and the arts.
“It would be amazing to see projects flourish and kids improving on instruments, all thanks to Harvey’s legacy,” Mrs. Owen said.
Through this initiative, Mrs. Owen hopes to give others the chance to find inspiration and confidence through creative expression, just as her son did.
