The Music Works, a charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged young people through music, has opened a new recording studio in Cinderford, Gloucestershire.
With support from a BBC Children in Need grant, the charity launched this second music hub in September and plans a formal opening in January.
The expansion allows the charity to reach more youth in the Forest of Dean, providing an outlet for those facing rural isolation and mental health challenges.
The organization offers mentoring and various activities like singing, podcasting, and dance, helping young people explore their creativity.
Mikel Medley, the charity’s youth support manager, describes the initiative as “almost a life-changer” for many participants.
“They talk about things they never would have discussed outside this setting,” Medley shared, adding that the youth projects are often deeply moving.
From its main Gloucester hub, which opened in 2021, The Music Works supports around 8,000 young people annually, also taking programs to schools and hospitals across Gloucestershire.
Elissa, 14, who participates in singing and podcasting, values the inclusive environment, saying, “Everybody’s unique… It’s all up to you, it’s your taste.”
Javeisha Powell, a 21-year-old alumna who now mentors at the charity, says the experience has empowered her.
“I’m working with younger people, which is beneficial because I’m learning from them, and I feel like I’m becoming the voice I needed when I was their age,” she explained.
The charity is hosting its fourth annual creative industries event on November 14, providing young people with an opportunity to connect with professionals in the music industry.
