A new play titled Redlands, based on the infamous 1960s drug trial of Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, is set to debut in the same town where the trial took place. Named after the West Wittering home where the two musicians were arrested, the play will run at Chichester Festival Theatre from 20 September to 18 October.
Written by Charlotte Jones, the play explores the impact of the trial, which many view as a “cultural turning point.” It centers on the friendship between Jagger’s then-girlfriend, Marianne Faithfull, and teenage actor Nigel Havers, whose father, Michael Havers QC, defended Jagger and Richards in court.
Although Jagger and Richards were initially sentenced to prison, their sentences were later overturned on appeal. Jones consulted with both Nigel Havers and Marianne Faithfull while developing the play, with both expressing support for the production.
