RuPaul has shared that his heart is “broken” following the death of James Lee Williams, known to the world as the drag queen The Vivienne.
On Instagram, RuPaul wrote, “I join the entire Drag Race universe in mourning the loss of The Vivienne, an incredibly talented queen and a lovely human being.”
The Vivienne, 32, who won the first series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019, passed away over the weekend, leaving the drag community in shock.
The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes on social media.
The official RuPaul’s Drag Race account also expressed their grief, saying, “She will be dearly missed, but her legacy will live on as a beacon of creativity and authenticity – she embodied what it means to be a true champion.” They added, “Our hearts go out to her family and fans during this difficult time.”
The Vivienne was known for her unapologetic uniqueness, sharp humor, and undeniable pizzazz.
Judge Michelle Visage had once described her as “the best Snatch Game character in the history of the show,” particularly praising her memorable impression of President Trump, which contributed to her victory on the show.
That win solidified her place in the drag community, and she went on to have a successful career in television and musical theatre.
Visage, who shared a close friendship with The Vivienne, wrote, “My darling The Vivienne, we go back to when I started coming over here to the UK.
You were always there, always laughing, always giving, always on point. Your laughter, your wit, your talent, your drag. I loved all of it but I loved your friendship most of all.”
Other Drag Race UK contestants, including Bimini Bon Boulash and Cheryl (formerly known as Cheryl Hole), also paid tribute to The Vivienne, expressing their shock and sadness at the news.
Bimini described herself as being “in total shock,” while Cheryl wrote, “I will love you forever Viv.”
Publicist Simon Jones, who announced the news of Williams’ death, described him as “an incredibly loved, warm-hearted and amazing person.”
River Medway, a fellow Drag Race UK contestant, expressed deep admiration for The Vivienne, stating, “He was the blueprint of a drag superstar. So talented, so funny, so entertaining. I used to love getting a gig with Viv because it meant I would get to watch her.”
Medway also reflected on what he saw as The Vivienne’s potential future role in the drag world, saying, “I was convinced The Viv was going to host Drag Race UK one day.”
Williams’ ex-husband, David Ludford, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, writing, “My heart literally sank when I got the call! My heart is shattered!”
Born in Wales, The Vivienne adopted her drag name in homage to Vivienne Westwood, whose fashion she adored.
Her legacy, marked by her talent, humor, and influence, will continue to inspire the drag community for years to come.
