Shawn Mendes is reflecting on his relationship with Camila Cabello after their breakup in 2021 and brief reconciliation in 2023.
Despite not being as close in recent years, Shawn expressed gratitude for their shared experiences and the deep understanding they have for each other.
In a Nov. 14 interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, the 26-year-old singer explained, “We really know each other’s hearts,” and acknowledged that they can “see through each other’s bullshit pretty easily,” which he finds comforting.
Looking back, Shawn admitted that Camila helped him find balance in his life, especially when it came to being less disciplined.
He laughed as he recalled how she would get frustrated when he didn’t indulge in simple pleasures, like having a cheeseburger.
“It was huge. I needed that at the time in my life,” he said.
Since their breakup, Shawn has been open about the challenges they faced under public scrutiny.
On the Jay Shetty Podcast in September, he spoke about how difficult it was to block out the noise of public commentary on their relationship.
“Camila and I have just done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other,” he shared, explaining that, despite the pressures of fame, they continue to respect each other deeply.
While their romantic relationship has ended, Shawn confirmed that he and Camila still text occasionally and that, as long as they’re “good,” the noise around them doesn’t affect their bond.
He expressed appreciation for Camila, calling her “an amazing human being” who is “incredibly understanding and thoughtful and caring.”
