Shed Seven’s frontman Rick Witter has shared that the band is still coming to terms with the surreal achievement of having their second number one album this year.
The York-based Britpop band recently topped the charts with Liquid Gold, joining an elite group of artists who have managed two chart-topping albums in a single calendar year.
This milestone comes on the heels of their first-ever number one album A Matter of Time, released in January to celebrate their 30th anniversary.
The achievement has placed Shed Seven in the ranks of legendary artists like The Beatles, Elton John, Queen, and Taylor Swift, all of whom share the rare feat of having two number one albums within the same year.
“It’s madness,” Witter said. “I think it’s going to take a little bit of time to compute… Probably in January 2025 when we go a bit quiet, we’ll sit down and start doing the stats and wondering what on earth has happened.”
Shed Seven, known for putting York on the musical map, marked their 30-year journey with two massive homecoming shows at York’s Museum Gardens, playing to crowds of 4,000 each night.
Guitarist Paul Banks expressed disbelief at their second chart-topper: “Can’t quite really believe that we’re standing here once again this year, but this is our second number one of 2024, which is just absolutely mind-blowing.”
Having previously enjoyed six Top 40 albums in the UK, including the 1996 classic A Maximum High, Let It Ride (1998), and 2017’s Instant Pleasures, the band’s latest success with Liquid Gold revisits iconic tracks from their catalog in celebration of their 30-year career.
