South African actress and singer Winnie Khumalo has passed away at the age of 51 after a brief illness, her family has confirmed.
The Afropop star, celebrated for her powerful voice and decades-long career, died on Tuesday while being rushed to the hospital, according to her sister Tshepi Rakeepile.
“My sister was sick and had a short illness. We believed she was recovering, but this morning it became clear she wasn’t. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead,” Rakeepile told SABC TV. Details of Khumalo’s illness have not been disclosed.
Khumalo began her music career in the 1980s and rose to fame with her hit song Live My Life.
She collaborated with legendary South African artists, including the late Brenda Fassie, and became a household name through her dynamic performances and versatile voice.
Beyond music, she appeared in popular South African TV series, further cementing her legacy in the entertainment industry.
She released numerous solo albums and worked as a backup singer for Fassie, a partnership that showcased her vocal prowess.
Khumalo’s contributions to South African music earned her recognition as an icon, with Kalawa Jazmee Records describing her as a source of inspiration whose “passion, talent, and dedication” left a lasting impact.
Khumalo is survived by her daughter, singer Rethabile Khumalo, and her son, Thabo Khumalo. Fans and celebrities have expressed their grief on social media, paying tribute to her influence and artistry.
“Her powerful voice and unforgettable performances have left an indelible mark on the industry and in the hearts of her fans,” Kalawa Jazmee Records said in a statement.
Winnie Khumalo’s passing marks the end of an era, but her music and legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
