Taylor Swift is on fire!
The pop superstar has made history yet again, surpassing Beyoncé as the most awarded solo artist in MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) history. At the 2024 MTV VMAs, held at New York’s UBS Arena, Taylor swept the night with seven new Moon Person trophies, adding to the 23 she already owned. This win pushed her total to an astounding 30 VMAs, topping Beyoncé’s 26 solo wins.
However, it’s a bit of a tie as Taylor and Beyoncé now both hold the record for most overall VMAs with 30 each. Beyoncé’s count includes not only her 26 solo wins but also awards with Destiny’s Child and The Carters (her collaboration with husband Jay-Z). It’s a monumental moment for both artists as they continue to reign supreme in the music world.
Leading this year’s VMA nominations, Taylor had a whopping 12 nods, including big categories like Video of the Year and Song of the Year for her emotional hit “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone. Meanwhile, Beyoncé was nominated for three awards, including Song of the Year for her track “Texas Hold ‘Em,” competing against Taylor’s song and hits from other artists like Kendrick Lamar and Sabrina Carpenter.
The night also marked a poignant moment in pop culture history—15 years after Kanye West’s infamous stage invasion at the 2009 VMAs when he interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech to declare that Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” was the deserving winner. In a graceful move, Beyoncé later brought Taylor back on stage to finish her speech, solidifying their mutual respect.
Since that fateful moment, the two icons have continued to support each other. In October, Beyoncé attended the premiere of Taylor’s Eras Tour documentary in Los Angeles, while Taylor showed her love by flying to London a month later for the debut of Beyoncé’s Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé. Taylor has often praised Beyoncé, calling her “a precious gem” and lauding her for challenging industry norms. With both superstars at the top of their game, it’s clear they’ve built a legacy of mutual admiration and unmatched success.
