The Wombats have expressed their excitement at headlining the opening night of Liverpool’s On The Waterfront festival, marking a return to their roots.
The indie rock trio will take the stage at Pier Head on 19 June, in what is being hailed as their largest hometown show to date.
Joining them on the first night will be Pale Waves and Sawyer Hill, with more acts set to be announced.
The four-day festival features an impressive lineup, including Wolfe Tones on 20 June, Cream Classical Ibiza with the 50-piece Kaleidoscope Orchestra on 21 June, and Sting closing out the event on 22 June.
Comprising frontman Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy, bassist Tord Overland Knudsen, and drummer Dan Haggis, The Wombats formed while studying at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.
They gained prominence in 2007 and are now preparing to release their sixth studio album, Oh! The Ocean, in February, followed by a UK tour culminating in their festival performance.
Drummer Dan Haggis described the event as a “special night,” promising new music from their upcoming album alongside fan-favorite hits.
“The Mersey and Liver Buildings will provide the backdrop, we’ll provide the tunes,” he said.
