The music world is mourning the loss of US rapper Rich Homie Quan, after authorities confirmed his death on Thursday. The Atlanta-based artist, whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, passed away in his early 30s. The Fulton County Medical Examiner announced the news, but the cause of death remains unknown, with an autopsy scheduled for Friday.
Rich Homie Quan was a prominent figure in the Atlanta rap scene, rising to fame in the mid-2010s. His 2013 hit Type of Way catapulted him into the mainstream, followed by the chart-topping Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh) in 2015. He earned multiple nominations at the BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including for best new artist and the people’s champ award. Throughout his career, he collaborated with major artists like 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane, and Trinidad James.
Born in October 1989, Rich Homie Quan was the eldest of three siblings, raised in a single-parent home in Atlanta. Before pursuing music, he had aspirations of becoming a professional baseball player. However, his path changed, and after serving 15 months in jail for involvement in a series of burglaries in 2011, he fully committed to his music, making a name for himself in the rap world.
Following the announcement of his death, tributes poured in from across the industry. Singer Jacquees was among the first to express his condolences, posting on X, “Rest in Peace my brother Rich Homie Quan. I love you for Life,” and calling him a “legend” in a follow-up post.
2 Chainz shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, writing: “Dam lil brother, we just spoke about shooting a video. Special prayer for you and your family, and pray for any and everybody that’s dealing with something. My condolences, bru.”
Rapper Quavo also paid tribute, posting a picture of himself with Rich Homie Quan and other artists, writing, “May God be with us, never saw this being a part of our journey.”
Engineer Alex Tumay, who worked with Rich Homie Quan over the years, called him “one of the nicest people I ever worked with and a true artist. Absolutely crushing news. RIP.”
