Tributes have poured in for former BBC presenter Chris Serle, described as “funny, clever and charming,” following the news of his passing at the age of 81. Serle’s family confirmed his death on Monday.
Born and raised in Bristol, Serle became a well-known face on British television, rising to fame on the satirical consumer affairs show That’s Life! alongside Dame Esther Rantzen in the 1980s. Reflecting on his passing, Dame Esther said, “I am so very sad to hear that Chris Serle, one of our best-loved That’s Life! reporters, has died. He was as nice off camera as he was on—funny, clever, and charming.”
Serle’s career spanned several popular TV and radio programs, including In at the Deep End and Points of View, where he served as a longtime host. He also chaired Radio 4’s Pick of the Week and hosted a well-known afternoon show on BBC Radio Bristol.
His family released a statement honoring his memory, noting that he was a “familiar and cherished figure on British television screens throughout the 1970s and 1980s.”
Serle is survived by his wife Ali, their three children, and two children from a previous marriage. Funeral and memorial service details will be announced soon.
