Usher opened up about the intense competition between himself and Justin Timberlake to sign Justin Bieber to their respective labels back in 2008 in a recent interview with People magazine.
Reflecting on the pivotal moment in his career, the 45-year-old music icon discussed how he and Scooter Braun, his partner in the Raymond Braun Media Group, were introduced to Bieber shortly after the success of his album “Confessions.”
Usher recalled presenting Braun with an offer he believed was irresistible, emphasizing the potential for a lasting partnership. However, the situation quickly turned into a bidding war between himself and Timberlake.
“I was like, I’m not certain that I could understand each and every producer that this artist could benefit from, but what I can tell you is I’m going to give you my passion, and I’m going to give you every bit of what I have to offer,” Usher explained.

The Grammy-winning artist underscored the importance of signing Bieber, noting that the dynamics wouldn’t have worked if the young star had joined Timberlake’s camp, considering there can only be one Justin. He also praised Braun’s entrepreneurial spirit, expressing confidence in his ability to support and nurture Bieber’s career.
“I believe in you, and if we can have a partnership, I’ll give you every bit of wisdom that I have and grow you and support you in whatever you’re trying to accomplish as a businessman,” Usher recalled telling Braun.
Despite the fierce competition for Bieber’s talent, Usher emphasized that he and Timberlake maintain mutual respect for each other’s artistry. While attempts were made to collaborate, their busy schedules have prevented any significant projects from materializing.
“We are all unique artists and have our creativity,” Usher remarked. “I’ve always wanted to do a record with Justin, and I have reached out many times, but we’ve never managed to make it happen.”
