US singer Teddy Swims made a surprise stop in Tamworth, Staffordshire, on Tuesday to experience the famous potatoes from TikTok sensation Ben Newman, also known as Spudman.
The singer, who is currently touring the UK, wasted no time sampling every option on the menu.
“I had all of them, everything they’ve got back there—the chilli, the cheese, the slaw, the curry,” Swims said.
Hundreds of fans gathered at St Editha’s Square, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Lose Control hitmaker.
Swims not only handed out free potatoes from the van but also signed autographs and even performed live with Telford-based band Callum & The Pookies.
Newman revealed that the singer’s team had reached out after Swims discovered his street food videos online.
“Apparently he’s a fan, and he was like, ‘Let’s go and see Spudman.’ We’ve been trying to make it happen since his last tour,” Newman said.
“They rang me at Christmas and said, ‘We’re coming back,’ and now it’s finally worked out. It’s amazing—I can’t believe it’s happening.”
Swims, who is set to perform at the Utilita Arena Birmingham, expressed his love for the city. “It’s my favorite place to be; people are so sweet.
It reminds me of home in Georgia. I always say this is like the rednecks of the UK,” he joked in an interview with BBC Radio WM.
For Newman, the day was a whirlwind.
Having started work at 4 a.m. to prepare for Swims’ visit, he was also looking forward to the second half of the day.
“Teddy’s come to us today, and we’re going to him this evening. I get to go to his gig in Birmingham and hopefully hang out with him,” he said.
The viral meeting between a TikTok-famous street vendor and a chart-topping artist proved to be a perfect recipe for excitement, music, and, of course, plenty of potatoes.
