After nearly three decades at the helm of Versace’s creative vision, Donatella Versace is stepping down from her role as creative director.
Since taking over in 1997 following the tragic murder of her brother Gianni, she has been instrumental in shaping the brand’s iconic image, overseeing hundreds of fashion campaigns as well as designing hotels and even cars.
The 69-year-old fashion legend will be succeeded by Dario Vitale, a former design director for Miu Miu, who is set to assume both creative and brand ambassador responsibilities.
This change comes amid speculation that the Prada Group might be interested in acquiring Versace from Capri Holdings, the conglomerate that purchased the fashion house for €2 billion in 2018.
In an official statement, Capri Holdings explained that Versace will now focus on supporting the brand’s philanthropic and charitable initiatives while continuing to champion its legacy on a global scale.
The statement praised Vitale as a visionary leader whose talent is expected to drive Versace’s future growth, and expressed gratitude for Donatella’s invaluable contributions to the company’s worldwide success.
Taking to Instagram, Donatella Versace reflected on her journey with heartfelt gratitude.
“It has been the greatest honour of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy,” she wrote, emphasizing that Versace remains a core part of her identity.
She also expressed excitement for the new creative direction under Vitale’s leadership.
Throughout her tenure, Versace has not only dressed some of the world’s biggest stars—from Madonna and Beyoncé to Lady Gaga—but also created some of the most memorable moments in fashion history, including designing the famous green jungle dress for Jennifer Lopez and Michelle Obama’s state dinner ensemble in 2016.
Founded in Milan in 1978 by Donatella and her brothers, the brand has long been synonymous with bold prints and vibrant style, a reputation that continues under its new creative direction.
Once part of the Michael Kors group before its integration into Capri Holdings in 2019, Versace now represents a significant portion of Capri’s revenue, underscoring its enduring impact on the global fashion landscape.
