Adele has been accused by the owners of a £6 million mansion she once rented of hindering its sale by allegedly suggesting the property was haunted.
The Grade II-listed Lock House in Partridge Green, West Sussex, where the singer lived briefly in 2012, has reportedly struggled to attract buyers ever since.
The property owner recently submitted a planning application to convert the 10-bedroom home into three residential units and transform its existing garage and flat into a separate cottage.
In the application, the owner claimed that Adele’s comments during an interview left a lasting impact on the house’s reputation.
“The first tenant, Adele, stayed for six months and blighted the property by saying it is haunted,” the application stated.
“This comment negatively impacted future marketing efforts and continues to affect the property’s reputation to this day.”
While Adele did not explicitly call the property “haunted,” she described the house as unsettling in a 2012 interview with Anderson Cooper on CBS.
Speaking about Lock House, she said, “This bit’s all quite scary, really. I’m not rattling around here on my own. It gives me the creeps.”
After Adele moved out, the house was relisted for sale but received no offers.
The owner then rented the property to a tenant who claimed to run a bespoke dressmaking business.
However, it was later discovered that the tenant was using the house as a residential retreat with 11 guest bedrooms and a fitness boot camp.
According to the planning application, the property has been on the market for approximately 14 years.
The only serious offer was made in August 2020, but the potential buyer pulled out upon hearing of the house’s alleged haunted status.
Lock House has a storied history.
Originally built around 1909, it underwent a major reconstruction in 1940.
By 1971, the property was divided into 26 lots and sold at auction, only to later become the Convent of the Visitation.
The current owner purchased the house in 2003 after the convent relocated to Albourne.
The mansion, set on a 32-acre estate, boasts 10 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a tennis court, a helicopter pad, and a cinema room.
Despite its luxurious features, it remains unsold, now listed for £5,995,000.
The ongoing struggle to sell the property has prompted the owner to seek new ways to repurpose it.
Whether Adele’s remarks are truly to blame or simply a ghostly coincidence, the mansion’s unique reputation continues to overshadow its potential appeal.
