Jax Taylor is setting the record straight on his divorce from estranged wife Brittany Cartwright. While Brittany filed for divorce in August after five years of marriage, the Vanderpump Rules alum claims he was the one who first decided to end their relationship.
Speaking on Bravo’s Hot Mic podcast on November 14, Jax revealed, “The second weekend of rehab, I emailed Brittany and said, ‘I’m getting a mediator.’
People don’t realize that I’m the one that initiated this.” According to Jax, his email prompted Brittany to escalate matters.
“She was like, ‘Oh, no, I’m getting a divorce lawyer.’
And I was like, ‘Okay, whatever,’” the 45-year-old shared. He speculated that Brittany wanted to file first to control the public narrative.
“I think she wanted to get ahead of it while I was in there. I think she wanted to be the first to publicly say, ‘I’m divorcing him,’ when, in all honesty, I was the one that initiated it,” he alleged.
Although Jax believes their breakup “needed to happen,” he admitted Brittany hoped they could repair their relationship.
“I think she really, really wanted me to work on the marriage. I think that was her goal. And I just was so checked out,” he confessed.
The couple, who share a 3-year-old son named Cruz, are now navigating co-parenting.
Jax acknowledged the irreparable damage in their relationship, saying, “I did a lot of negative things that really just tarnished our relationship, which is sad.”
Despite this, he maintains respect for Brittany as the mother of his child. “I love her. She’s the mother of my child. I will always be there for her for the rest of my life. I just don’t think I can love her like she needs to be loved.”
Meanwhile, Brittany has moved on, both romantically and in terms of co-parenting. She recently re-entered the dating scene, even briefly dating Jax’s friend Julian.
Speaking to E! News in September, Brittany emphasized their commitment to prioritizing Cruz.
“Even if Jax and I are fighting, it’s not going to ever come between Cruz. It’s never going to be a thing,” she stated.
For Jax, the focus remains on his own happiness and growth.
“Brittany and I have changed over the years,” he explained, adding that he has no intention of reconciling. “I’m very happy now, and I just can’t come back from that.”
