Jenn Tran’s season of The Bachelorette seemed to promise a fairy-tale ending—but it didn’t last long.
During the emotional September 3 finale, the physician assistant student got engaged to contestant Devin Strader after a tearful goodbye to runner-up Marcus Shoberg. The moment was full of surprises, with Devin expressing his eagerness to propose, only for Jenn to reveal, “I’m not gonna let Devin propose to me today. I’m gonna propose to Devin. I just want to make a big gesture.”
But the fairy tale quickly unraveled. Before the audience could see Jenn’s proposal, she appeared on After the Final Rose in tears, revealing the painful truth about their relationship.
“It’s been a really hard couple of months,” Jenn confessed. “We left Hawaii engaged and very, very happy. It was the happiest day of my life. But as soon as we left Hawaii, things started to change. It felt like he was pulling away, and all the promises he made about our future together seemed to fade.”
Jenn went on to explain that Devin’s efforts became inconsistent—fewer calls, fewer texts—and she was left feeling confused. Eventually, Devin called to break off their engagement, admitting that he no longer loved her and regretted getting engaged in the first place.
“I didn’t know,” Jenn said through tears. “He regretted getting engaged, and I didn’t know.”
When Devin appeared on After the Final Rose, he took responsibility for the breakup, saying, “I failed you. And there’s nothing I can say other than that. But everything I felt for you was real.”
However, Jenn questioned his sincerity, accusing him of following other women on Instagram and going clubbing after their split. Devin responded defensively, saying, “I think this is a little different than the conversation I was hoping to have with you. Am I not allowed to live a life?”
Jenn had hinted at the unexpected ending earlier this summer, telling E! News’ Francesca Amiker, “It’s definitely a shocker of an ending. It was a shocker to myself as well.”
She admitted, “You know, it’s not how I saw the journey ending when I first started it. So I’m really excited for everyone to watch that back.”
Jenn, who first appeared on Joey Graziadei’s season of The Bachelor, made history back in March when she became the first Asian-American lead on The Bachelorette. Reflecting on the milestone, she wrote on Instagram, “WHAT A DREAM. I cannot begin to explain how grateful I am and how surreal this all feels.”
The 26-year-old added, “I’d like to thank my friends and family for supporting me through my journey to this point. Without them, I would not have the strength and courage to do any of this. Also, FIRST ASIAN BACHELORETTE?! You have no idea how much this moment means to me.”
