Mae Whitman just shared some delightful news with her fans—she’s officially a mom! The Parenthood star, best known for her role on the hit series from 2010 to 2015, announced the arrival of her baby boy, Miles, at the end of August.
“Not to be a Bieber about it, but I too just gave birth to our son, Miles,” Mae wrote on Instagram on August 28, playfully referencing how Justin and Hailey Bieber welcomed their baby, Jack Blues, just days earlier. “From the moment we heard the first tiny sound out of his tiny piggy mouth, we were besotted.”
Mae revealed that her son’s name is a tribute to her Parenthood co-star and close friend, Miles Heizer. She gushed about her little one, saying, “He’s the kindest, gentlest, smartest, funniest little beebee, and he’s our best friend—pretty much exactly like his namesake Uncle Miles @younggoth.” The actress even shared an adorable photo of the newborn’s tiny toes, making fans’ hearts melt.
Expressing her gratitude, the 36-year-old new mom continued, “We are infinitely grateful he chose us as his parents,” and gave a heartfelt shout-out to her doctor, doula, and care team for guiding them through the journey with love and grace. She also thanked everyone in their circle for their “radical generosity and support.”
Mae’s friendship with Miles Heizer has been well-documented on social media, so it’s no surprise that she named her son after him. Earlier this year, Mae hinted at her pregnancy with a sweet Mother’s Day post in May, featuring her baby bump alongside her Parenthood co-stars, including Lauren Graham. “Not to make a Parenthood episode out of it or anything but!!! Mother’s Day looking a little different this year!” she wrote, sharing throwbacks from when her character Amber was pregnant on the show.
Despite the excitement surrounding her pregnancy, Mae kept much of her journey private, only posting an “8-month update” in June where she mentioned being “huge and achy but happy” while sharing a glimpse of her Laguna Beach babymoon.
In recent years, Mae has taken a step back from social media, posting only occasionally. She shared her excitement on September 3 about an upcoming virtual autograph signing, saying, “I’ve been missing going to cons and meeting you guys since I’ve been pregs and raising this little dude, and I’m jazzed to sort of get to do it from home.”
Mae’s Instagram feed might be quiet lately, but her career has been anything but. The actress, who’s been in the industry since she was a child, has appeared in iconic films like Independence Day and Hope Floats. She credits her parents for helping her navigate childhood stardom with balance and focus on her happiness.
However, Mae’s journey hasn’t always been easy. In a 2018 interview, she opened up about the challenges of growing up in Hollywood and the pressures of fitting into the industry’s narrow standards. But through it all, Mae has remained true to herself, focusing on her unique strengths and refusing to let others define her.
As Mae Whitman embarks on this new chapter of motherhood, she’s doing it on her own terms—just as she’s always done with her career and life.
