Mumford & Sons will close out this year’s Radio 1’s Big Weekend, headlining the festival’s final day on Sunday, May 25.
The Grammy-winning band will take the main stage at Sefton Park in Liverpool, joining fellow headliners Sam Fender and Tom Grennan in what has been described as a male-heavy lineup by some fans.
Despite the criticism, the festival will showcase a range of artists across its four stages.
The final day’s main stage lineup includes Tate McRae, Jorja Smith, Lola Young, and Wet Leg.
On the New Music Stage, Flo, Self Esteem, South Arcade, and Joy Crookes will perform, with Brit Award winner JADE headlining.
Debate Over Gender Representation
Some fans have voiced disappointment over the lack of female headliners, with one social media user commenting, “Line-ups continue to be male-dominated despite so many female musicians having incredible success right now.” Another joked, “It should be called Radio 1’s Big Men’s Weekend.”
However, others are thrilled about the lineup, particularly with artists like JADE, Flo, and Tate McRae performing on the same day.
Radio 1 responded to the criticism, stating that “female artists make up around 60% of this year’s Big Weekend lineup, with more acts yet to be announced.”
The station also acknowledged the need for better gender representation across the music industry.
A Star-Studded Weekend
The three-day festival, running from Friday, May 23 to Sunday, May 25, is expected to attract over 100,000 fans.
Other major acts performing include Wolf Alice, Blossoms, Tom Odell, Myles Smith, Biffy Clyro, James Hype, and The Wombats. On the New Music Stage, artists like Aitch, AJ Tracey, Artemas, Good Neighbours, Inhaler, Jordan Adetunji, Barry Can’t Swim, Nia Archives, and Katy B will perform.
Liverpool, known for its rich musical history—having produced The Beatles, The Wombats, The Zutons, and Atomic Kitten—will serve as the perfect backdrop for this massive event.
