Waverley Borough Council has announced that renovation work on the historic Museum of Farnham in Surrey will commence on 6 January 2025.
Scaffolding and a temporary roof will be installed around the museum’s home, Willmer House, with the restoration expected to be completed by early 2026.
The project will involve restoring the building’s 1718 timber sash windows, removing modern paint from the windowsills and entrance door to reveal the original Portland stone, and repairing the guttering and drains.
Despite the extensive work, the museum is expected to remain open throughout the renovation process.
Funding for the project has been secured from several sources, including the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, Waverley Borough Council, Farnham Town Council, and the Farnham and District Museum Society.
Kika Mirylees, Waverley Borough Council’s portfolio holder for community services, leisure, and equality, diversity and inclusion, expressed enthusiasm for the project.
“We are so happy that this work is now starting and that the historic integrity of this beautiful building will be preserved for the community,” she said.
“This project is a testament to our dedication to maintaining our heritage sites for future generations, and we are working hard with partners to ensure any disruption to the local community is kept to a minimum.”
The Museum of Farnham, housed in the Grade I-listed Willmer House, showcases the rich history and cultural heritage of Farnham and its surrounding areas.
