Rick Witter, the lead singer of the Britpop band Shed Seven, might soon have an unusual honor in his hometown of York—a gritter named after him.
Following the band’s recent success of landing their second number-one album this year, Witter expressed excitement at the possibility, calling it a “dream come true.”
City of York Council’s deputy leader Pete Kilbane confirmed the plan, saying the council could name one of its new gritters “Rick Gritter” to celebrate the band’s chart success.
“This year we could see Rick Gritter on the streets of York,” Kilbane told the BBC, adding that Witter could even cut the ribbon at the unveiling.
Witter, thrilled by the news, said: “Life made. Thank you, councillor,” and expressed his eagerness to take a ride in the vehicle.
Kilbane also joked about naming a smaller gritter that works on cycle paths “Liquid Gold,” after Shed Seven’s latest album.
“At some point, we could have a full Shed Seven fleet,” he quipped.
The tribute would mark a unique way to celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary, during which Shed Seven held two sell-out gigs at York’s Museum Gardens.
Their album A Matter of Time, released in January, became their first-ever chart-topper and was followed by Liquid Gold, placing the band in the prestigious ranks of artists like The Beatles, Queen, and Taylor Swift, who have also achieved two number-one albums in a single year.
