King Charles III has given the world a glimpse into his musical tastes, curating a special playlist for Apple Music featuring an eclectic mix of genres spanning different eras.
From reggae icon Bob Marley to the Grammy-nominated RAYE, the monarch’s selections reflect his appreciation for music’s power to uplift and unite.
To mark Commonwealth Day, listeners can tune in to Charles’ playlist on Apple Music 1 throughout Monday and Tuesday, enjoying a collection that blends disco, reggae, and pop classics.
“Throughout my life, music has meant a great deal to me. I know that is also the case for so many others,” King Charles shares in his pre-recorded broadcast from Buckingham Palace.
“But perhaps, above all, it can lift our spirits to such a degree, and all the more so when it brings us together in celebration. In other words, it brings us joy.”
His playlist includes a variety of familiar names such as Kylie Minogue, Grace Jones, and Nigerian superstar Davido.
The King also shares personal anecdotes about his encounters with some of these artists and explains why their songs hold a special place in his life.
Recalling a memorable performance, Charles mentions Kylie Minogue’s visit to St. James’s Palace in 2012 ahead of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Australia.
“The song is ‘The Loco-Motion’ and this is music for dancing. It has that infectious energy that makes it incredibly hard for me to sit still,” he says.
Among the tracks is a rendition of “Could You Be Loved” by Bob Marley, performed by The King’s Guard.
Charles reminisces about meeting Marley in London, praising the reggae legend’s deep sincerity and dedication to his community.
“I always recall his words, ‘The people have a voice inside of them.’ He gave the world that voice in a way that no one who heard can ever forget.”
The playlist also pays tribute to Charles’ travels across Africa, featuring South African singer Miriam Makeba’s famous “Click Song,” performed in the Xhosa language.
Closing the selection is Diana Ross’ hit “Upside Down,” which Charles describes as one of his favorites.
“When I was much younger, it was impossible not to get up and dance when it was played, and I wonder if I can still just manage it.”
