Dancer Aljaž Škorjanec is setting the record straight about his recent break from Strictly Come Dancing, amid swirling rumors of a backstage altercation. The Slovenian star, who took a two-year hiatus from the hit dance show, has revealed that his decision was driven by his desire to be a devoted father and husband, not any on-set drama.
Reports emerged on Friday suggesting that Škorjanec left the show following an incident with a female dancer. However, in an interview with BBC News conducted prior to these allegations, Škorjanec explained his departure as a choice to fully embrace his role as a father.
In a statement responding to the rumors, Škorjanec’s representative firmly denied any claims of aggression or coercion. “It is untrue to say or suggest he was forced out or that he acted in an aggressive manner at any time,” the rep stated. “Aljaž has the utmost respect for everyone he works with. He chose to leave the show in 2022 of his own accord but has always loved Strictly and was delighted to be asked back. He is excited to make his return to the dancefloor this year.”
The Sun article alleged that an altercation occurred during the Strictly Come Dancing live tour in 2022, but BBC Studios declined to comment on the matter.
Škorjanec, who joined Strictly in 2013, took a break to focus on family life with his wife, Janette Manrara, and their newborn daughter, Lyra. “It was always something that we both really, really wanted,” Škorjanec said. “I wanted to be a hands-on husband and father. It was a no-brainer for me.”
The dancer expressed his gratitude for the time he was able to spend with his daughter, calling it “bonding time I could never get back.” Now, he’s thrilled to be returning to Strictly and feels fortunate that his break allowed him to focus on his family while preparing to rejoin the show.
Meanwhile, Manrara, who also stepped back from Strictly in 2021, has been busy choreographing a new jive routine inspired by their love for dogs. “To see doggies dancing, that was pretty cool, as we’ve never done anything like that before,” she shared.
As the new season of Strictly approaches, Škorjanec is looking forward to returning to the show, though he admits to feeling some nerves after a two-year absence. The BBC has introduced chaperones in all training room rehearsals this year, a move Škorjanec supports wholeheartedly. “I think it’s a great thing,” he said. “I think we need to ensure the happiest, most successful escapism for millions of people.”
Amidst ongoing controversies surrounding the show, including recent allegations about the treatment of celebrities, Škorjanec remains optimistic about the future. The new season is set to kick off later this month, with fans eagerly awaiting his return to the dancefloor.
