Jennie Garth is opening up about her emotional journey to motherhood. The Beverly Hills, 90210 star recently shared how her attempts to have children through IVF with husband Dave Abrams strained their relationship, ultimately leading to a 10-month separation in 2018.
“[We] were trying to have a baby, and it kept failing,” Jennie told Self in a September 12 interview. “It was really hard on both of us individually and on our relationship.”
The 52-year-old actress revealed that the couple went through multiple unsuccessful rounds of IVF, a process involving fertility drugs, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo transfer. The stress of these failed attempts led to their brief split, with Dave filing for divorce in April 2018. However, the couple reconciled less than a year later and canceled their divorce filing in February 2019.
Jennie explained that they eventually made the decision to stop pursuing children together, a choice that she says “freed us up to love each other in a different way.” She praised Dave as an incredibly supportive and loving partner, adding, “He’s just always thinking of how he can make me happy and make the day go better.”
Dave continues to play an important role as a stepfather to Jennie’s three daughters—Luca, 27, Lola, 21, and Fiona, 17—whom she shares with ex-husband Peter Facinelli. Jennie and Peter were married in 2001 and separated in 2012.
In addition to opening up about her fertility journey, Jennie revealed her decision to go public about her health challenges, specifically two secret hip replacement surgeries in 2020 and earlier this year. “I’ve kept it a secret for so long, but I’m no longer at a place where I want to hide things,” she told Self, noting that positive feedback from her vulnerability on platforms like her 90210MG podcast has encouraged her to share more.
