Josh Phillips, one of the creators behind the iconic Strictly Come Dancing theme tune, says the vibrant Latin melody still holds a special place in his heart, even 20 years after its debut.
Co-written with Dan McGrath, the tune has become synonymous with Saturday night entertainment, blending brass and Latin rhythms to create an infectious, timeless sound.
Phillips recalls initially experimenting with disco ideas before deciding on a Latin American style, realizing its universal appeal.
“It makes you want to get up,” he said, reflecting on the tune’s global success, including its adaptation for Dancing with the Stars in the U.S., which required a “glitzier and faster” version.
Despite a career performing with legends like Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and Sting, Phillips acknowledges that the Strictly theme has become his most recognized work.
His standout moment, however, remains a star-studded concert for Montserrat at the Royal Albert Hall, sharing the stage with music icons for a rendition of Hey Jude.
Now focused on his new band, The Blue Water Giants, Phillips has teamed up with John “Rhino” Edwards of Status Quo and Neil Taylor from Tears for Fears.
The band has begun performing, with plans for a European tour as they “follow the sun” with their music.
