Sir Elton John has revealed ongoing vision problems stemming from an infection in July, leaving him unable to complete his new album.
Speaking on ABC’s Good Morning America, the music legend shared that he has lost sight in his right eye for the past four months, while his left eye remains impaired.
“I can do something like this [interview], but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for start,” Sir Elton said.
He described the challenges, saying, “It kind of floored me—I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”
While receiving treatment, Sir Elton remains hopeful.
“There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK,” he noted, emphasizing that his recovery is the current priority.
His comments come nearly a year after he told the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame audience in November 2023 that he had “just finished” a vibrant new album with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin.
However, the recent update suggests that completion is still a work in progress.
Despite his vision struggles, Sir Elton has remained active in public life.
He attended premieres for his documentary Never Too Late in Toronto and London and joined Dua Lipa on stage at the Royal Albert Hall to perform their duet Cold Heart.
He also appeared at the opening of Tammy Faye on Broadway and introduced a song from The Devil Wears Prada at the Royal Variety Performance in London.
Fans will have to wait longer for his next studio album, which would be his first since 2016.
For now, Sir Elton’s focus remains on his health, with the hope of eventually returning to the music he loves.
