Filming for the highly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, has officially commenced in north Wales, with Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy reprising his iconic role as Tommy Shelby.
The film, a continuation of the beloved BBC crime drama series, picks up the story of the Peaky Blinders gang set in Birmingham during World War II.
The first scenes were shot at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct near Wrexham, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Local business owner Chris Allen described the excitement: “No one knew what was being filmed at the basin until Cillian Murphy, in his classic Tommy Shelby attire, appeared on a vintage narrowboat.”
Murphy’s narrowboat featured period-appropriate signage, alongside another marked “Thomas Coathupe & Sons Ltd – 1893.”
A helicopter was seen filming aerial shots of the aqueduct and surrounding waterways, adding to the cinematic scale.
Joining Murphy in the film are Rebecca Ferguson, Stephen Graham, Tim Roth, and Barry Keoghan, though Keoghan has yet to be spotted on set.
The movie is directed by Tom Harper with a script by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, who is also producing.
The film replaces the previously planned seventh season of the series, which concluded its sixth and final season in 2022.
Steven Knight has hinted at potential spin-off shows to expand the Peaky Blinders universe.
While the release date remains under wraps, fans can revisit all six seasons of Peaky Blinders on BBC iPlayer as they await Tommy Shelby’s return to the big screen.
