La Voix, a Buckinghamshire-based drag queen who is currently competing in the sixth series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, has opened up about how the show is helping to boost the profile of drag culture. The 43-year-old performer, who previously made it to the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent and competed in Queen of the Universe, joked about her surprising path to Drag Race fame.
“I thought it was Bargain Hunt I was applying for,” La Voix quipped, adding, “I went in there thinking, ‘Why am I doing this? They’re going to be absolute kids,’ but I had an absolute ball. I would do it again in a flash.”
Though she described her time on the show as “the most petrifying thing I’ve ever done,” La Voix relished the experience. A seasoned performer from Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, she has toured the world, performed in pantomimes across Aylesbury and High Wycombe, and entertained audiences on more than 80 cruise ships.
La Voix praised RuPaul’s Drag Race for its role in making drag more mainstream and accessible. “There’s these little windows where drag has been really popular, then it goes underground for a little while,” she said. “This is a massive resurgence thanks to that show. It’s appealing to people who have never seen a drag show or even dreamed of going to one, but it has opened their eyes to something that is absolute fun.”
La Voix, who also previously hosted on BBC Three Counties Radio, shared how the resurgence of drag is reflected in her diverse audiences. “People think it’s going to be predominantly a gay community audience. It’s not. I’m lucky if I can get some gay men in; they can’t be bothered to see me anymore!” she laughed.
She explained that her shows attract a surprising mix of people, especially in northern England. “They bring their husbands—whether they’re truckers, miners, butchers, or farmers—and they are the ones who come out having had a better night than their wives who booked the tickets.”
As La Voix continues to charm audiences on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, she is also celebrating the growing acceptance and enjoyment of drag culture across all kinds of people, from seasoned fans to curious newcomers.
