After a summer spent campaigning for No. 10 Downing Street, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has set his sights on an entirely different No. 1 — the Christmas singles chart.
Teaming up with the Bath Philharmonia’s Young Carers’ Choir, Sir Ed is releasing Love is Enough, a heartfelt charity single celebrating the bonds between carers and their loved ones.
The song, written by young carers and former carers, delivers an emotional message of enduring love. Proceeds from the track will support the Carers Trust and Bath Philharmonia.
Sir Ed, who cared for his mother during her terminal cancer diagnosis as a teenager, expressed a deep personal connection to the song’s lyrics.
“When I heard the opening lyrics to Love is Enough—‘every second we have left is worth a thousand others’—it struck home and meant so much,” he shared.
Jason Thornton, Bath Philharmonia’s music director, praised the young carers’ contributions, highlighting their profound message: “Love is everywhere, even when it’s taken for granted.”
The choir’s performance adds an authentic touch to the single, making it a testament to the resilience and dedication of carers.
Sir Ed joins in vocally during the bridge and chorus, though he wisely leaves most of the singing to the choir.
This collaboration marks the first time a major UK political party leader has released a Christmas single, though it follows Sir Ed’s penchant for headline-grabbing stunts, such as paddleboarding and bungee jumping during election campaigns.
Securing the Christmas No. 1 will be no easy feat. Sir Ed faces competition from music heavyweights like Ed Sheeran, Tom Grennan, and the anniversary remake of Do They Know It’s Christmas?.
Other charity singles, including All You Need is Love by The Celebs and Reverend and The Makers’ Late Night Phonecall, are also in the race.
While the Christmas charts have seen choir successes in the past — such as the Military Wives (2011) and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir (2015) — modern streaming trends make the battle more complex.
Classics like Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas and Wham!’s Last Christmas dominate due to millions of streams.
Wham!’s hit claimed last year’s top spot, 39 years after its release, and is favored to repeat the feat this year.
Despite the odds, Sir Ed remains focused on the song’s purpose rather than the competition. By spotlighting the contributions of carers and their unique challenges, Love is Enough hopes to resonate far beyond the charts, inspiring listeners during the festive season.
