A popular music and arts venue in Coventry, The Tin, is raising funds to improve its deteriorating exterior, which management says is deterring potential customers.
Located in a former coal storage area in the city’s canal basin, the venue has received a grant from the Veolia Environmental Trust but needs to raise £10,000 to complete the project.
Marketing manager Jess Harper explained that the venue’s front was “falling off,” with weather damage exacerbated by recent storms.
“A lot of people who come often will have noticed when they come to a gig the front is falling off,” she said.
So far, supporters have raised £2,000, and several local bands are contributing to the cause by playing a fundraising gig on 21 December.
Harper expressed gratitude for the bands’ involvement and hopes the event will bring in more supporters.
The Tin, while hosting many gigs and community projects, has become “a little bit shabby” according to Harper.
The renovation will focus on repairing the building’s exterior, adding new signage and planters, and addressing safety concerns with the venue’s cladding and old windows.
Harper emphasized that the venue’s current condition was affecting bookings, with couples who had met there discouraged from hosting their weddings at the venue due to its appearance.
Although the Veolia Trust grant will cover much of the renovation, The Tin must contribute £10,000 to finalize the project.
Harper stressed the importance of preserving The Tin, particularly as many independent music venues across the country are being closed.
In addition to hosting gigs, The Tin runs educational programs like Live on Stage, which helps senior school-aged children explore music through workshops.
Harper concluded, “We just need our front to reflect the amazing stuff that goes on inside.”
